De Anza College Accounting 1B
Extra Credit Opportunities
(Extra Credit Can NOT move someone
from an “A” grade to an “A+” grade)
Mystery Movies &
Mystery Locations
From time to time, movie
excerpts and photographs will be shown. Most of the photographs are on
campus. The object is to identify the movie and describe the campus
location. If you know the answer, DON’T TELL THE CLASS. Form a
group (Maximum size 5 people), then save up your guesses and compare them with
others in your group. At the end of the quarter each group will submit
one piece of paper with all of the group’s guesses. The group that gets
the most answers correct will get 5 extra credit homework points per
person. The 2nd place group will get 4 points and the 3rd
place group will get 3 points. In case of ties, the winner will be
chosen by random selection. You are in
competition with other groups. If your
group appears to have collaborated with other groups, your group will not be
eligible.
Micropoints
From time to time, extra
credit will be handed out in the form of “Micropoints”. These are printed certificates with unique
numbers. The certificates are
non-transferable and can only be used in the class where they were handed
out. You cannot transfer them from one
person to another. Each time you receive
a micropoint certificate you should write the date and reason received on the
back. You need to save the micropoints
until the end of the quarter and turn them in.
Micropoints are due on the last day of class before Finals. (not
accepted the day of the Final.) At the
end of the quarter, please staple all of your micropoints
into one packet. Then write your full
name on the back and total up all of your micropoints. Write the total on the back along with your
name. (Please do not make your own
packet with notebook paper.) This is
extra credit. The amount of extra credit will be determined at the end of
the course. Since this is extra credit, you need to follow the above
instructions exactly. Failure to follow the instructions (or
provide the correct micropoint total) will result in
zero points. Your micropoints may be
“audited” at the end of the course. If
you have an above average number of micropoints, the dates and reasons received
written on the back of each certificate may be scrutinized. If the dates and reasons do not make sense
in the opinion of the instructor…or are missing, then your micropoints will not
be allowed.

Makeup QUIZ questions
instructions
DEADLINE FRIDAY 3/16/12
at 5pm SHARP!
Extra Credit…Create multiple choice questions and
answers, then post to Catalyst website.
I need your help creating a makeup quiz. The make-up
quiz will allow anyone who passes it to make up a missing homework assignment,
one day group project or a quiz. The makeup quiz will only use questions
created by the class. If I don’t get enough good questions then there
will not be a makeup quiz.
If you submit at least one
multiple choice question then you get two (2) extra credit homework
points. If I use your question then you get an additional (3) extra
credit homework points. Maximum possible extra credit is 5 homework
points. You can submit more than one question but maximum is 5
points. To enter a question you will
need to login to the Catalyst website according to instructions given earlier
in the quarter.
To create a question go to:
Then go to the Extra Credit Multiple Choice Question
forum. Post your question by clicking
on the “Add a new discussion topic” button.
Create a multiple choice

a. an easy way to get
some extra credit

ANSWER: a. an
easy way to get some extra credit
Other Options for Extra Credit
There will be two extra
credit pathways this quarter. You can do
one or the other but not both.
PATHWAY ONE: Join and successfully complete the Adjunct
Program. This program will be/was
presented in class. You need to enroll
in a half-unit class and go to meetings once per week with one of my “TA’s” for
this class. You also need to complete
some skills workshops. You will receive
a pass/not pass grade in the half-unit class.
If you pass this course, you will also get THREE (3) extra credit
“PERCENTAGE POINTS” in the Accounting 1B class.
A “PERCENTAGE POINT” relates to
your grade at the end of the quarter.
For instance, three “PERCENTAGE POINTS” would increase your final course
score from an 89% to a 92%. Remember
extra credit can NOT increase your grade above an “A”.
PATHWAY TWO: This has two components. You can do either one or both of the
components.
PATHWAY TWO Component A:
Attend two (2) Tutorial Center Skills Workshops this
quarter and earn 15 extra credit homework points in 1B. You can select any 2 STUDY SKILLS or
COLLEGE & CAREER SUCCESS workshops; however, if one of the workshops is
Brain Game: Engaging Ethics then you can earn 17 points instead of 15 points. (8
points if you attend only 1 workshop.) If
you finish both workshops by the end of the 6th week, February 17,
2012, you can get an additional extra credit point. (These MUST be STUDY SKILLS or COLLEGE & CAREER SUCCESS workshops…NOT
content workshops such as any Economics workshops or the WRITING & READING or LISTENING/SPEAKING workshops. These latter workshops do not qualify for
extra credit.)
To sign up go to ATC-302/3
and sign up in the notebook binder for the workshops. When you sign up in the binder make a
notation that you are in Scott’s 1B class.
Print out an attendance sheet and TAKE IT TO EACH WORKSHOP. When you attend each workshop YOU SHOULD GET
THE PRESENTER TO SIGN THE SHEET. Give the sheet to Scott after you have gone to
the workshops.
CAUTION:
Students in my sections have a lower priority than some of the other
students. That means that even if you
have signed up for a class, you may be bumped out of it. Therefore, you should try to fulfill your
requirement as early in the quarter as possible, in case you get bumped. If you wait until the end of the quarter you
may not be able to attend the requisite courses. You should also double check the time and
location of the workshops because sometimes they are moved to another
location. You also need to BE ON TIME to
the workshops. They lock the door and
then will not let any more students in after the workshop starts. The

up early as these workshops can fill up.
PATHWAY TWO Component B: (Due at the final exam)
Write a 1,500 word
paper. You can earn as many as THREE
(3) extra credit “PERCENTAGE POINTS” for this assignment. A

final course score from an 89% to a 92%, for instance.
Extra Credit Paper
DUE AT THE
FINAL EXAM.
No late papers accepted.
You can
choose between two paper topics. (Do one or the other…not both)
TOPIC
A…Sarbanes Oxley…OR
TOPIC B…2008 economic
crisis
TOPIC
A
Write
a 1,500 word paper on Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
Details: If you choose to write a paper on SOX the
paper should address the following items:
1. A brief introduction and description of SOX,
2. The reasons that SOX was enacted,
3. The provisions of SOX…what does SOX do,
4. The impact of SOX on current business practices and
the accounting profession,
5. Controversie
6. Possible future changes to SOX…directions for the
future.
TOPIC
B
Write
a 1,500 word paper on one small aspect of the 2008 economic crisis. A challenge of this paper will be to limit
the scope of the paper so that it can be handled in 1,500 words. Keep the scope small so that you can more
easily manage it. Your paper should
include the following elements.
1. Description of the facts and problems related to your
chosen topic.
2. Discussion of the causes of the problems.
3. Possible solutions for the problems and/or probable
future outcomes.
4. Public policy changes that could be made in the future
to minimize the chance of recurrence of the problems.
Applicable
to both papers:
Remember
that I am interested in your thought process and writing efforts…not in
your ability to copy and paste from the web.
Copying material from the web should only be done in very limited
instances…AND only with proper attribution (footnotes). Copying from the web or any other source without
proper attribution is plagiarism and considered cheating. The paper should be typewritten.
This
extra credit paper should be checked for originality on Turn it in.com before
you submit the hard copy paper. For
instructions on using Turn it in click the link: Turn it
in.com instructions
